About

Brahmatal! It gets its name as Taal means lake, a lake where Lord Brahma meditated, and so it's called Brahmatal. As the legend says, Lord Brahma wrote the Vedas sitting by the side of this majestic lake. The trek is also famous for another lake called Bekaltal, bekal meaning frog and tal meaning lake, which as per the locals was created by the snake deity they worship as their protector. The snake deity has a frog servant who was very loyal and humble, for whom the snake created this lake as a reward. These lakes are often frozen during winters and provide a magical reflection of the oak trees and the Himalayan peaks.

Rishikesh to Lohajung | Scenic Mountain Drive

Altitude: 2,300m / 7,800 ft | Drive Distance: 250 km | 10–11 hours approximately

Your journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh, as you set out for Lohajung, the base village for your upcoming trek. The drive spans approximately 250 kilometers and takes around 10–11 hours. As you leave Rishikesh behind, the road gradually winds through the scenic mountain terrain, offering glimpses of the majestic Garhwal Himalayas in the distance. The journey is as beautiful as the destination, with the tranquil River Ganga accompanying you through the early stretches of the drive. Along the way, you’ll witness three of the sacred confluences of the Panch Prayag — Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag. At Devprayag, the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge, forming the holy Ganga. The confluence is a spectacular sight, where two rivers of distinct turquoise and teal shades unite. Next comes Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini joins the Alaknanda River. Finally, Karanprayag marks the confluence of the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, each of these sites adding spiritual depth and natural beauty to your journey. Passing through towns like Srinagar and Karnaprayag, you’ll eventually ascend to Lohajung, nestled at an altitude of around 2,300 meters. This charming village offers the first close views of the stunning Nanda Ghunti peak. If you reach before sunset, you might be lucky enough to witness the golden light bathing the snow-capped summit. Lohajung is steeped in mythological lore, said to be the place where Goddess Parvati fought a demon named Lohasur, thus earning the name “Lohajung” (Loha = demon, Jung = war). On arrival, check into a local guest house or homestay. After freshening up, you can take a short stroll around the village to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Lohajung also has a small market where you can purchase any last-minute items needed for your trek. As night falls, gather with your group for a trek briefing by your trek leader, followed by a warm and comforting dinner. Prepare for a peaceful night’s rest as you adjust to the colder, higher-altitude environment of Lohajung.

Lohajung to Gujreni | Forest Walk and Birdwatching

Altitude: 2,800 m / 9,200 ft | Trek Distance: 4–5 km | 5 hours approximately

Wake up to a refreshing mountain morning in Lohajung and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off on your trek to Gujreni. Today’s trek is relatively short, spanning 4 to 5 kilometers, but offers a rich experience of natural beauty and forest charm. As you leave the village behind, follow a well-laid manmade trail that gradually ascends through the upper region of Lohajung. The path leads you through a scenic forest trail dotted with rhododendron, oak, and maple trees, creating a colorful canopy during spring or a snowy cover in winter. As you begin your ascent, you’ll pass a few isolated homes and soon get glimpses of the distant Mundoli village. Follow the visible water pipelines to stay on track. A little ahead lies a picturesque section of forest where rhododendron trees dominate the landscape — especially magical between February and March when the trail bursts into red and pink hues. After a couple of hours of trekking, you’ll reach a serene rest point known as Begum, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan meadows and distant peaks. It’s a perfect place to pause, rehydrate, and soak in the landscape. About 10 minutes beyond Begum, you’ll cross a gurgling stream and continue your trek through dense woodland until you reach the Gujreni stream. Your campsite for the night lies near this stream, nestled in a peaceful clearing surrounded by golden oak, silver oak, maple, and rhododendron trees. It’s not just a scenic haven but also a fantastic spot for birdwatching. If you're lucky, you might spot rare Himalayan birds like the Himalayan woodpecker, Asian Barred owlet, blue-fronted redstart, and the elusive solitary snipe. After reaching the campsite, take some time to relax and enjoy a warm lunch. In the evening, you can go for a short acclimatization walk to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. As dusk settles in, witness the mesmerizing colors of the evening sky peeking through the forest canopy. End the day with a wholesome dinner under the stars, preparing yourself for the adventure that lies ahead

Gujreni to Tilandi | Forests to Meadows and Himalayan Views

Altitude: 3,200 m / 10,500 ft | Trek Distance: 4–5 km | 4 hours approximately

Begin your day with a warm breakfast at the Gujreni campsite, surrounded by dense forest and the songs of Himalayan birds. Today’s trek to Tilandi is relatively short, covering approximately 4 to 5 kilometers in about 4 hours, but offers some of the most stunning landscapes of the entire trail. As you begin ascending from Gujreni, you re-enter the forested world of oak and rhododendron trees. In spring, these forests are ablaze with red and pink blooms, while in winter, a serene blanket of snow adds a mystical quietude. After an hour of trekking through this enchanting forest, the scenery begins to transform. The trees gradually recede, revealing wide open alpine meadows that stretch endlessly under the sky. As you step into these meadows, a majestic view unfolds—snow-capped giants Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti, along with their sister peaks, rise magnificently in the distance. Their sheer size and beauty dominate the horizon and offer a humbling experience in the lap of the Himalayas. Tilandi, your campsite for the night, is situated on the edge of these expansive meadows. The location is tranquil, with soft grass beneath your feet, crisp mountain air, and stunning views in every direction. The peaceful ambiance makes it an ideal spot to relax, reflect, and connect with nature. After arriving at Tilandi, rest and enjoy a hot lunch prepared by the trek team. Later, take short acclimatization walks around the meadows to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. The sunsets here are absolutely magical — vibrant hues painting the sky behind the snowy peaks, making it a photographer’s paradise. But the beauty doesn’t end with the sunset. As night falls, Tilandi becomes a perfect stargazing spot. The clear mountain skies reveal a canopy of stars, ideal for night photography or simply lying back and taking in the wonder. End your day with a warm dinner and tuck into your tent for a peaceful night’s sleep, preparing for the adventure that continues tomorrow.

Day 4 is a significant and adventurous stretch of your Brahmatal journey. You'll cover approximately 6 kilometers over 7 to 8 hours, ascending to the trek’s highest point—Brahmatal Summit—before descending to your campsite near the sacred Brahmatal Lake. Begin your day early with a warm breakfast at the Tilandi campsite. If the skies are clear, you’ll witness a majestic sunrise illuminating the snow-clad Himalayan peaks, a picture-perfect moment to start your trek. Soon after, you’ll begin trekking along a gently sloping ridge leading toward Jhandi Top. As you gradually ascend, the landscape begins to open, unveiling jaw-dropping views of the Garhwal Himalayas. Reaching Jhandi Top at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft), you’re greeted with a panoramic view of the grand Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. From this vantage point, you can also trace parts of the famed Roopkund trail. This spot is ideal for photography and soaking in the vast expanse of the Himalayan wilderness. Continuing from Jhandi Top, take the trail on the right that climbs another ridge to Brahmatal Top—the highest point of the trek at 3,750 meters (12,250 ft). The climb is steady but rewarding. From the summit, the 360-degree Himalayan views are absolutely surreal, with snow-blanketed ranges stretching to the horizon. This is the perfect place to pause, catch your breath, and snap a few memorable photos. From the summit, begin your descent to the highlight of the day—Brahmatal Lake. This pristine alpine lake, nestled in a snowy basin, is steeped in legend and tranquility. During winters, it freezes over completely, its glassy surface reflecting the peaks and sky. A small temple near the lake adds to its spiritual allure. Spend some peaceful time by the lake, soaking in the silence and natural beauty. The final leg is a gentle 500-meter walk to your Brahmatal campsite, located on the left slope above the lake. The site offers uninterrupted views of the western horizon, making it one of the best spots on the trek to catch the sunset. As the sun dips behind the ridges, the sky glows in magical hues of gold and pink, closing your day on a perfect note. Have a hearty dinner at the camp and tuck into your tents for a well-earned rest after an exhilarating day.
