Drive from Rishikesh to Chopta

Drive from Rishikesh to Chopta

Your journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh, one of the most spiritually vibrant towns nestled along the Ganges River. The drive kicks off around 7:00 AM and spans roughly 7–8 hours, covering a scenic route that winds through the heart of Uttarakhand. As you ascend into the Garhwal Himalayas, you'll pass iconic pilgrimage towns like Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge to form the Ganges. This confluence is a spiritual and geographic marvel that sets a sacred tone for the rest of the trip. Along the way, you'll witness changing landscapes—from dense forests and rolling hills to terraced farms and quaint mountain villages. Passing through Srinagar and Rudraprayag, the drive offers plenty of opportunities to soak in Himalayan views, take photos, or stop at small roadside eateries for authentic Garhwali snacks. Upon reaching Chopta by the late afternoon or early evening, you’ll check in to cozy Deluxe Camps set against a panoramic alpine backdrop. Nestled at around 8,790 feet, Chopta is a peaceful, unspoiled hamlet often referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland' of India. After settling in, you’ll be treated to a delicious dinner prepared with local ingredients and a warm Garhwali touch. Post-dinner, gather around for a short briefing session with your tour leader, covering trek guidelines and what to expect ahead. Overnight stay at Chopta.

Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila, return to Chopta

Trek: 3.5 km | Trek: 1.5 km Chandrashila peak | Return to Chopta

Today is the highlight for many adventurers, as it involves trekking to Tungnath—the highest Shiva temple in the world—followed by an optional ascent to Chandrashila summit. After an energizing breakfast, the group sets out on a 5.5 km trail that begins from Chopta. The route is moderately graded, winding through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and snow-capped views depending on the season. Despite the climb, the beauty of the landscape keeps spirits high. The sight of Himalayan ranges like Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi peeking through the trees adds to the excitement. The trail is dotted with prayer flags and occasional resting points, allowing trekkers to pace themselves. After around 3–4 hours, you’ll arrive at Tungnath, sitting at an elevation of 12,073 feet. This ancient temple is over 1,000 years old and is part of the revered Panch Kedar circuit. After spending some reflective time here, the trek continues upward to Chandrashila, an additional 1.5 km stretch that takes about an hour. This part of the trail is steeper but rewards you with a spectacular 360-degree view of the Garhwal and Kumaon ranges. After soaking in the views and clicking memorable photos, the descent back to Chopta begins. The return is quicker, and if timed well, you’ll be back at camp just in time to catch the golden hues of the sunset bathing the valley. Overnight stay at Chopta.

Drive Back: 2.5-3 hrs | End trek

The final day of your journey begins with an early breakfast in Chopta before setting off towards Sari village, which is the base for the Deoriyatal trek. The drive is relatively short—around 1.5 hours—and offers more opportunities to admire the quiet charm of Uttarakhand’s mountainous terrain. Upon arrival in Sari, you'll prepare for a gentle 2 km hike to Deoriyatal. The trail is beginner-friendly and takes about 1.5–2 hours, gradually climbing through rhododendron groves and ancient oak forests. As you approach the lake, the surroundings begin to open up, revealing the pristine waters of Deoriyatal. This alpine lake is famed for its surreal reflection of the Chaukhamba peak, especially during early morning and late afternoon when the wind is calm. Spend some time here soaking in the silence, capturing photographs, or simply gazing at the mirror-like water framed by towering trees and snow-draped peaks. After taking in the magic of this place, begin your descent back to Sari village, where a hot lunch awaits at a local eatery or homestay. From here, begin the long but comfortable drive back to Rishikesh, which will take approximately 7–8 hours. The journey gives you ample time to reflect on the experiences of the past two days. You'll arrive back in Rishikesh around 9:00–10:00 PM, where you can either spend the night or continue your onward journey. End of trek.
