Manali Arrival | Drive to Jobra | Trek to Chika

Trek to Chika: 2 km | Trek time: 45 minutes approx

Your journey kicks off in Manali, a popular high-altitude town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas. Located at 2,050 meters above sea level, Manali serves as a bustling base for trekkers heading into the greater Himalayan ranges. After arriving, completing registration, and meeting your trek leader and fellow participants, you'll head out on a scenic 45-minute drive to Jobra (2,700 meters). The route winds through dense pine forests, charming wooden houses, and terraced fields, gradually taking you away from urban life into untouched nature. From Jobra, your trek to Chika begins. This is a relatively short and easy 2-kilometre walk, ideal for warming up and acclimatizing to the altitude. The trail follows the Rani Nallah, a glacial stream that flows beside you as you walk through thick alpine forests filled with pine, oak, and birch trees. The sound of the stream, combined with birdsong and the rustling of trees, creates a serene atmosphere. You'll likely encounter grazing sheep and local shepherds guiding their flocks through these paths. As you proceed, the forest begins to open up into sprawling green meadows surrounded by granite outcrops and distant snow-covered peaks. The Chika campsite, situated in one of these meadows, offers a stunning first night in the mountains. After reaching the campsite, set up your tents, freshen up, and enjoy a warm cup of tea or soup while soaking in the view. Evening temperatures can dip significantly, so layering up is essential. Dinner is typically a wholesome meal prepared by the trek team. Use the evening to relax, stretch out your muscles, and mentally prepare for the longer treks ahead. The calm and quiet of the Himalayas are therapeutic, especially under the starlit sky. This day not only introduces you to the beauty of trekking life but also allows your body to start adjusting to higher altitudes. Overnight stay in tents at Chika.

Chika to Balu Ka Ghera Trek

Chika to Balu Ka Ghera Trek

Trek Distance: 8.5 km |Trek From Chika to Balu Ka Ghera

After a restful night under the stars, begin your day early with a nutritious breakfast at the campsite. Today’s trek from Chika to Balu Ka Ghera spans approximately 8.5 kilometres and usually takes around 6 to 7 hours, depending on your pace and the weather conditions. This part of the trail gradually ascends and is more demanding than Day 1, making it an excellent opportunity to build rhythm and stamina. The path continues along the Rani Nallah and crosses several streams and wooden bridges. Early into the hike, you’ll notice the landscape changing dramatically. The lush green meadows are sprinkled with wildflowers, and on either side, jagged cliffs and towering peaks loom majestically. You'll occasionally need to cross icy streams, so waterproof shoes and extra socks are essential. One of the stream crossings requires stepping over boulders and ropes may be used by trek leaders to assist participants. As you move higher, the vegetation begins to thin, and you'll enter a more alpine environment. The trail is peppered with boulders and scree in certain parts, so careful footing is advised. Herds of sheep and mountain goats are a common sight, often accompanied by local shepherds who spend their summers in the high-altitude pastures. Balu Ka Ghera, which translates to ‘bed of sand,’ is located at around 3,600 meters. It is believed that brown bears used to hibernate in this area during winter, hence the name. The campsite is surrounded by snow-clad mountains and offers views of the Hampta Pass in the distance. On a clear day, the sunset here paints the entire valley in hues of orange and pink, making it a perfect spot for photography. Once you reach Balu Ka Ghera, you’ll be provided with evening tea and snacks, followed by dinner. It’s important to rest well and stay hydrated because the next day is the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek—crossing the Hampta Pass. Overnight stay in tents.

Balu Ka Ghera to Siagoru Trek via Hampta Pass

Balu Ka Ghera to Siagoru Trek via Hampta Pass

Trek Distance: 7 km | Hampta Pass to reach Siagoru.

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the Hampta Pass Trek. You’ll be trekking from Balu Ka Ghera to Siagoru via the Hampta Pass, covering around 7 kilometres in approximately 9 hours. Start early—by 6:00 AM—to ensure you have ample daylight to complete the pass crossing. A warm breakfast and packed lunch will be provided to keep your energy levels high throughout the journey. The day starts with a steady ascent from the Balu Ka Ghera campsite. As you gain elevation, the trail becomes steeper and rockier. The green of the meadows gives way to snow patches, scree, and moraine fields. You might encounter snow even in the summer months, and in colder seasons, the trail may be fully snow-covered. Crampons or microspikes may be required based on trail conditions. As you ascend, take breaks to breathe deeply and hydrate regularly. Once you reach Hampta Pass, situated at 4,270 meters, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view. On one side, the lush green valleys of Kullu open up, and on the other, the stark, barren terrain of Spiti reveals itself. Peaks like Deo Tibba and Indrasan dominate the horizon. Standing at the pass is a humbling and exhilarating experience—it’s a true high point of the trek, both literally and emotionally. After soaking in the views and clicking photographs, begin the descent to Siagoru. This is a steep downhill stretch and requires careful footing, especially on loose gravel or snow. Trek leaders often assist here to ensure everyone's safety. The landscape drastically transforms as you descend—moving from snowfields to rocky trails and then to the sparse high-altitude meadows of Spiti. Arrive at Siagoru, a tranquil campsite located beside a stream, surrounded by barren hills and offering a stark contrast to the greenery of earlier days. Settle into your tents, rest your tired muscles, and reflect on the immense achievement of the day. The air is crisp, and the silence is broken only by the sound of the flowing stream. Enjoy a hearty dinner and turn in early. Overnight stay in tents at Siagoru.

Today offers a beautiful blend of trekking and off-road driving through Spiti’s stunning terrain. After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent from Siagoru to Chatru, covering a distance of about 7 kilometres in approximately 4 to 5 hours. The descent is relatively easy compared to the previous days but still requires attention as some sections are steep and rocky. You’ll walk along the Chandra River, surrounded by towering, barren cliffs on one side and deep gorges on the other. The sharp contrast between the greenery of Kullu and the desert-like terrain of Spiti is truly fascinating. As you near Chatru, the trek culminates at a roadhead where vehicles will be waiting to take you on a scenic drive to Chandratal Lake, about 48 kilometres away. This journey takes around 3 hours and passes through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region. On a clear day, the towering CB (Chandra-Bhaga) mountain range dominates the skyline. The drive is bumpy and adventurous, making the destination even more rewarding. Chandratal, or 'Moon Lake', is a high-altitude lake situated at 4,250 meters, known for its stunning turquoise water and pristine surroundings. If road and weather conditions permit, you'll get the opportunity to explore the lake, walk along its shores, and take photographs. The setting is surreal, surrounded by mountains with snow patches even during the summer. Spend some time here soaking in the peace before heading back to Chatru. Once you return to Chatru, relax at the campsite with evening refreshments. The day's combination of trekking, driving, and lake exploration makes it one of the most eventful days of the trek. After dinner, share stories with fellow trekkers and unwind under the vast, starlit sky. Overnight stay in tents at Chatru.

This drive is as scenic as it is adventurous, especially with multiple water crossings, rugged mountain roads, and ever-changing landscapes. As you descend from the high-altitude deserts of Spiti into the lush greenery of the Kullu Valley, you’ll once again experience the dramatic transition between two vastly different ecosystems. The route passes through Gramphu, from where the famous Leh–Manali Highway begins. Depending on the weather and season, you may encounter waterfalls cascading down rock faces or snow bridges melting into mountain streams. The drive offers ample opportunities to reflect on your journey—the highs of crossing Hampta Pass, the serene moments by glacial streams, and the camaraderie formed with fellow trekkers.
